Hi, my name is Annie Kelly and I first stepped on a yoga mat in 1996. My journey to yoga has been a long one after many years spent partying but I got there in the end!! Below is my story….
Yoga has helped me in my life more than I ever imagined it would. I partied hard in my 20s and 30s and was usually the drunkest one at the party! Looking back, I think I did this as I was deeply unhappy with myself and thought drink and drugs were the answer. But through yoga I came to simply accept myself as I am and my need to get so ‘hammered’ decreased. I didn’t realise doing asana ( yoga poses) and pranayama ( breath techniques) would have such life changing affects!!
After many years of practice, I decided to become a teacher and gained my 200-hour teaching certificate in 2013 with the amazing Katy Appleton from Apple Yoga. I had done her DVDs for years and knew if I wanted to teach, I would have to learn from Katy as I respected her so much and loved the way I always felt so amazing after her classes and I wanted to be able to pass that on to my own students.
I have been teaching full time ever since and enjoy passing on my knowledge of this beautiful ancient system to others. I absolutely love teaching and I endeavor to make my classes accessible to everyone regardless of their flexibility (contrary to popular belief, you really don’t need to be flexible to do yoga- it’s a beautiful by-product of the practice), age (my youngest student is 13 and my oldest is 94!) or body size/shape. Yoga isn’t interested in such things! Yoga is about bringing the mind to a peaceful state and accepting ourselves as we are. I’m passionate that anyone who walks into my classes will leave feeling good about themselves and NOT that they are ‘no good at yoga’ (this was my own experience of my first class many years ago, and it took me a long time to ever go to a group class again.)
I continue to be a student of yoga , regularly going on trainings and retreats to increase my knowledge of this vast subject. I have taken many workshops with International teachers and am so grateful for the circumstances in my life that have allowed me to continue to learn.
